Dear Music Professors and Lecturers,
I am currently undertaking a music education research project towards a Doctor of Philosophy (Education) degree at The University of Western Australia. An important part of my study involves designing a Knowledge-Based Economy Music Curriculum Framework (FMCF) for Singapore lower secondary schools that reflects the desirable workforce qualities required for the Knowledge-Based Economy (KBE). For the purpose of this study, the term KBE will refer to an economy that generates economic growth through its workers who will become innovators, creators and applicants of knowledge, entrepreneurs, lifelong learners, and risk-takers (Teo, 2000; Lim & Tan, 2001). A curriculum framework is "a set of standards and/or objectives developed to guide the areas of curriculum development and assessment" (Host, 2004) and a document that provides information, guidelines, suggestions and resources (Alaska Development of Education & Early Developmentation, 2004). It contains a philosophy, purpose statement, and rationale (Montgomery County Public Schools, 2003) and "set out the entitlement to learning against which clear and detailed steps can be planned to enable learners to progress in a structured way" (Department of Education, 2004). The findings of the study are expected to lead to the development of the KMCF, which will incorporate your perspectives. The KMCF hopes to cater for the needs of students in secondary schools, preparing them with the appropriate skills for a member of the KBE. Your contribution to this study is greatly appreciated. The survey will take less than 30 minutes to complete. There is no obligation for your participation. Please fill up your name, school and email address at the end of the survey for any follow-up correspondence where necessary. Please also be assured that your responses will be kept completely confidential and anonymous. Your contribution towards this study is greatly appreciated. At the conclusion of this study, I will be delighted to provide you with a copy of the KMCF arising from the study. If you have any enquiries regarding the survey, please do not hesitate to contact me at the following telephone numbers or by email. (61) 423 669 363 (Perth Mobile) (618) 6488 2300 (Office) tanp19@student.uwa.edu.au (email)
Thank you in anticipation for you help
Yours sincerely, Penny Tan (Miss)
